BIM > the Hôtel Dieu. The style of the hospice was inspired by the architecture of the Valenciennes hospital and was designed by the flemish master Jehan Wisecrère
BIM > The Hospices de Beaune or Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune is an old medieval hospital
located in the centre of Beaune.
it is now a museum that shows how the hospices cared for the sick and indigent.

It was founded by chancellor Nicolas Rolin and his wife Guigone de Salins in 1443.
It is famous all over the world both for its architecture and its vineyard.
Old, disabled, poor people, orphans and patients attended the institution
from 1443 through until the 20th century.
BIM > the Hôtel Dieu, founded in 1443, this free hospital was established for the poor.
The hospital received its first patient on 1 January 1452, and continued to care
for the ill, elderly, disabled, and orphaned from the Middle Ages through to the
20th century.

BIM > Château du Clos de Vougeot.
Cistercian monks, from Citeaux Abbey, first planted vines
in the Clos de Vougeot back in the 12th century.
the monks also built the cellar and the vat house.
the château itself, surrounded by 50 hectares of vines,
was added in 1551 by Dom Jean Loisier the 48th Abbott of Cîteaux.
BIM > Chateau du Clos de Vougeot
located between Echézeaux and Musigny, the vineyard extends
from the gentle slopes of the Côte to the plains.
the château and its vineyards remained the property of the Abbey of Cîteaux
for nearly seven centuries until the French Revolution in 1790
when the buildings and vineyards were confiscated and declared state property.
a number of different owners succeeded each another during the 18th century
until the Clos Vougeot was bought in 1889 by six wine merchants from the region.
BIM > vineyards next to the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot.
one of the owners, Léonce Bocquet also bought the château and arranged
for major renovations giving it its current Renaissance façade.
the Château then passed to Etienne Camuzet who allowed the founders
of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin to use it
and before handing it over to them completely in 1944.
these Burgundians are dedicated to promoting Nuits-Saint-Georges wines
and preserving historic buildings of the area.

The Close de Vougeot is named after the Vouge - a stream separating
Vougeot from Chambolle-Musigny.
Château du Clos de Vougeot was classified as a national monument in 1949
and opened to the general public.
BIM > Chateau du Clos de Vougeot

Monks first planted vine in Clos de Vougeot in the 12th century. Nowadays, protected by a wall of stones, Clos de Vougeot is the largest grand cru area in Burgundy.

The vineyard of Clos de Vougeot is shared between 80 owners. It generates a lot of troubles for wine tasters as the average production per owner is a little bit more than 1,000 bottles !

Vougeot and Vougeot Premier Cru are the smallest appellations in Burgundy - excluding Clos de Vougeot - and sometimes provide very good value with both red and white wines.

BIM > Notre Dame de Dijon lit up in the evening.
Viollet-le-Duc was the first architect since the Middle Ages to have a
profound understanding of the principles of Gothic construction and
he devoted his careful attention to the structure of Notre-Dame.
the building dates from the second quarter of the 13th century.
It is famous for its gargoyles in the façade. These were made only in 1881.
none of them are gargoyles in the proper sense of the word since
they play no part in the water drainage system.
they form the most striking and original feature of the church.

BIM > Cathedral St.Lazare, Autun
The cathedral was built between 1120 and 1130 and was formerly the
chapel of the Dukes of Burgundy.
It has a ground plan in the form of the Latin cross, an aisled nave,
a plain transept and a three-stage choir with a semi-circular end.
The spike (Gothic) was built by Cardinal Rolin in the 15th C.

dating from the 12th and 19th centuries.

BIM > Château de Bussy-Rabutin.
Built in 1649 by Roger de Bussy-Rabutin, whose grandfather had purchased
the château in 1602.
On 16 April 1665, Bussy-Rabutin was arrested and imprisoned
in the Bastille, where he was to remain until 15 May in the following year,
when he was released on medical grounds.
In August he was given permission to retire to his estates in Burgundy,
where he remained in exile until 1681.
BIM > Château de Bussy-Rabutin
Roger de Bussy-Rabutin's offence was that of having written a short book
entitled Histoire Amoureuse des Gaules.
It was a series of tales, partly true and partly embroidered,
about four noble ladies - the comtesse d’Olonne, the duchesse de Châtillon,
the marquise de Sévigné and the marquise de Montglas.
It dealt with their affairs the complexity of which extended as far
as certain members of the royal family -notably the prince de Condé,
governor of Burgundy, who had no love for Bussy-Rabutin.
BIM > as the result of the condemnation of Roger de Bussy-Rabutin,

BIM > AUXERRE, the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne d’Auxerre is known

Most of the Burgundian Gothic cathedral was built between 1215 – 1233,

Construction on the nave and transepts proceeded slowly through
the 14th and 15th centuries.

BIM > CHABLIS
The history of Chablis is rather like that of France as a whole.
The first written records that mention Chablis go back to the year 867
when King Charles the Bald, grandson of Charlemagne,
presented the monastery of Chablis as a gift to the canons of Tours.
The monks took up residence, planted their vines, and made good use
of those that were already there.

From the Middle Ages wine was being exported from Chablis to England,
via Rouen, and to Picardy and Flanders via Compiègne.
The village of Chablis grew in the upper town with the Church of Saint Pierre,
the Hôtel-Dieu (hospital), the Priory of Saint-Cosme, and in the lower town
around the collegiate church of Saint-Martin.
It was the One Hundred Years’ War which explains why, at the beginning of the
15th Century, the ramparts of the lower town were built.

In 1478 Peter the Red obtained Royal Privilege to establish the fifth
printing shop in France here in Chablis. 1568 - Black February in Chablis:
The Wars of Religion set the town ablaze and Chablis was plundered
by the Huguenots, but the lower town escaped the fire which had already
ravaged the district of Saint-Pierre by paying a ransom.
BIM > CHABLIS
during the course of the second World War, the bombing of June 15th 1940
destroyed the historic centre of Chablis.
1949 marked the renaissance of the town and its vineyards: its wines could
once again embark on the routes which had led them to the tables of the entire world.
it was above all from the ’60s, thanks to the use of technical means
to protect them against springtime frosts, that the vineyards saw the expansion
which launched them on the path to today’s renown.
the picturesque village is made up of little lanes of 15th and 16th century houses.
there are also the remains of 15th century fortifications.
